we have an update on fiscal cliff negotiations this morning on "washington journal." guest: this is a recession between christmas and new year's. i do not know. maybe they should finish their work. you will see some push in the next few days to get a small deal done. viewers are fan of the process. anything that gets done needs to be done quickly before new year's to be signed into law. today is the 27. and so you have a few days left for lawmakers to make a deal. the president's should land at some point. there is a 5 hour time difference. they have to figure out something. it seems likely will go over the cliff. it has been looking like that before the holiday, but certainly now, particularly if you remember for congress broke for the christmas break, speaker raynor was not able to get the backup plan through his caucus, so there was no pressure on democrats to try to counter that immediately. senate democrats saying we passed a bill that raises tax rates on incomes over $250,000, we ran on this and this is what we are offering. house republicans were saying, no, we

kelly: theress a there is a lot of finger pointing as we get closer and closer to the fiscal cliff. both sides seem to be digging in leaving little room for compromise. republican senator john barrasso of wyoming says he wants to find a solution but he's not so sure about president obama. >> when i lessen to the president i think the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. i think he sees a political victory at the bottom of the cliff. he gets all this additional tax revenue for new programs, he gets to cut the military which democrats have been calling for for years an gets to blame republicans for it. kelly: that is the senator's opinion. we go now to david drucker the associate politics editor for "roll call" he joins in to weigh in on this issue. it seems all plans to avert the fiscal cliff is in complete disarray. we have house speaker john boehner declaring god only knows how a deal can be reached now. what are you hearing from lawmakers about their concerns? >> what i've heard from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and it's the only point of consens

we can still avoid going over the fiscal cliff if the president and the democrat control senate step forward this week and work with republicans to solve this problem and solve it right now. host: joseph rosenberg, your thoughts on what the senator had to say. guest: well, look, i'm not interested in getting in the middle of the political back and forth. you know, i think the main -- the first idea is similar to an earlier caller about this sort of insufficiency of only taxing the rich. and that's certainly a valid point. i think, again, there's -- you need to draw a distinction between what we're currently talking about the immediate issue of what our tax system will look like next year and then -- and separating that from the longer term issues of tax and spending in which there are, you know, real philosophical differences about the role of government in social insurance in providing health care and how we're going to raise revenue going forward. host: our next caller comes from chris in houston, texas on our line for democrats. go ahead, chris. caller: hi. i'm just saying that pa
